Glossary of relevant terms

The following is a glossary containing basic definitions for a better understanding of environmental protection, environmental management systems and sustainable development.

ENVIRONMENT (according to the Environmental Protection Act) is the natural surroundings: air, soil, water and sea, climate, plants and animals in the totality of their interaction, as well as the cultural heritage as a part of the surroundings created by man.

ENVIRONMENT (according to ISO 14001 Standard) is the surroundings in which organisations operate, including the land, water, air, natural resources, plants animals and people, as well as their interactions.

In short, the ENVIRONMENT is everything created by man and by nature in the course of the evolution of the Earth over the past 4.5 billion years.

ECOLOGY is a science studying the interaction of living organisms in a particular area / “oikos” (home, habitat) + “logos” (science).

ENVIRONMENTAL PROTECTION includes the content, means and mechanisms used to address the environment with the purpose of maintaining its inherited (original) or insubstantially changed conditions. Its objective is to maintain the environment in such conditions that do not compromise the survival of man in a certain area at a particular time.

ENVIRONMENTAL MANAGEMENT SYSTEM (according to ISO 14001 Standard) is a part of a comprehensive management system involving the structure of an organisation, planning activities, liabilities, practice, processes, procedures and resources relevant to the development, implementation, following, assessment and maintenance of the environmental management policy.

SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT (“Our Common Future” – Brundtland Report, 1987) is development that meets the needs of the present generations without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs.

SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT (International Institute for Sustainable Development - IISD) in a business context has the meaning of adjusting business strategies and activities to meet the needs of companies and investors while protecting, maintaining and improving human and natural resources necessary for the future.
