Agrolaguna Opens new Investment – Production and Tourist Complex in Istria
May 10, 2013
The realization of this extraordinarily demanding project started in July 2012 and only took six months. The works were entrusted to Croatian contractors – GP „Krk“ did the construction works, while „Frassinox“ manufactured and installed the processing equipment.
Modern cheese production equipment and the implementation of state-of-the-art technologies enable the consistent production of high-quality cheese able to meet the demands of both the domestic and foreign markets. „Sir Laguna“ is one of three cheese factories in Croatia to have received support from the IPARD program for the reconstruction and equipment.
Yet in the first stage the cheese factory will manufacture 300 tons of cheese and 100 tons of curds per year, thus continuing its traditional production. The production program shall, along with the existing assortment including cow cheese, sheep cheese, mixed cheese and truffles cheese, be enriched with the following products: cheese in Teran wine, mixed cheese from three types of milk, grated cheese and curds. The cheese supply shall reflect the specific features of the clime and the possibilities of a small cheese boutique, ideally amalgamating traditional products, local values and customs and state-of-the-art technology.
In the 1980's Agrolaguna started breeding sheep for the needs of producing and processing milk in its own small cheese factory. The Špin sheep farm is located at the northwestern coast of Istria, in Tar near Poreč, only two kilometers from the sea. At the beginning the cheese factory only processed sheep milk from its own farm and produced not more than 10 tons of cheese per year. Later the repurchase of sheep and cow milk from contract farmers from the Istrian area started. With joining the Agrokor Group in 2004 the cheese factory starts to produce cow and mixed cheese, truffles cheese and curds and the quantities produced reach 125 tons. Agrolaguna's cheese factory keeps investigating the possibilities of manufacturing new products to offer consumers attractive products specific of the Istrian area. The „Sir Laguna“ cheese factory will be a place for tourists to visit a sheep farm, taste and buy indigenous Istrian cheese, which is a straightforward way to tie agricultural production and tourism, the two major business segments in Istria.
