AVIVA polyclinic opened the first HISPA center in Croatia

AVIVA polyclinic opened the first operational HISPA center for hypertension, prevention of heart attack and stroke in Croatia

The program of the center is based on an individual approach and long-term monitoring of patients with an increased cardiovascular risk

The first operational and professional HISPA center for hypertension, prevention of heart attack and stroke in Croatia was opened on 18 April at AVIVA Polyclinic, with the aim of health preservation and the prevention of heart attack or stroke, or the identification of people at risk for cardiovascular disease in order to prevent severe consequences.

According to the data of the World Health Organization, cardiovascular diseases are the leading cause of death in the world and every second person dies of these diseases in Croatia.  The mortality rate related to cardiovascular disease in Croatia is 48.3 percent, while in the EU this percentage is 42 percent. This fact is all the more worrying because 30% of people do not know that they belong to the risk group.
A new approach to treatment in accordance with the program developed by HISPA, an international association for monitoring hypertension (high blood pressure), preventing heart attack or stroke, should prevent and reduce the number of people falling in this group. This is achieved by following the specific HISPA's program, which, in addition to the interdisciplinary approach to the treatment of people with an increased cardiovascular risk, also differs from other programs for the treatment of these diseases in terms of a special doctor-patient relationship - regarding long-term monitoring.
"The risks for cardiovascular disease are smoking, increased blood pressure, high triglycerides, high blood sugar, kidney damage, physical inactivity, stress and others", as pointed out by prim. mr. sc. Ivan Sokol, MD, FESC, internist - cardiologist and the head of the HISPA center of Aviva Polyclinic.
Slaven Janečić, the managing director of Aviva Polyclinic said at the opening: "AVIVA Polyclinic pays special attention to the development of new and high personalization of existing services and programs. Therefore, the opening of the HISPA center is a big step forward when it comes to cardiovascular disease, considering that this is a comprehensive program of personalized measures of treatment, tailored to each individual patient.
At the HISPA center, the patient is subjected to a detailed examination with the emphasis on the risk factors for cardiovascular diseases, as well as anything else that can affect the patient's health.  After that, with the aim of calculating the cardiovascular risk, a detailed examination with additional diagnostic tests is performed. We develop a special electronic health record for each patient that monitors the long-term status of their health, but also offers a personalized program that includes advice on health care, nutrition and exercise."

The Croatian center is the 40th such center in the world, and  prof. dr. Nebojša Tasić, a specialist in internal medicine-cardiologist, is the president and founder of the HISPA association and the head of the Center for Cardiovascular Research "Alexander D. Popović" in Belgrade. The HISPA association is very active in the region and these centers have successfully been treating more than 7000 patients who had found their doctor, their center and their concept of preserving health several years after the lowering of the cardiovascular risk. Modern prevention of heart attack or stroke is based on an individual approach to patients and interdisciplinarity, which is the basic characteristic of the HISPA centers.

More on HISPA procedure for examining a patient and what does this examination entail
At the HISPA center, the patient can be primarily examined by a cardiologist or a nephrologist, or neurologist and even a general practitioner, depending on the primary disease and related comorbidities.
A detailed history of the patient is checked, with a special emphasis on risk factors for cardiovascular disease: lifestyle, habits, hereditary risks, as well as everything else that affects the health of the examined persons. After that, with the aim of calculating the cardiovascular risk, a detailed examination with additional diagnostic tests is performed, in accordance with the indication: ECG, X-ray, ultrasound of the heart, the abdomen, thyroid, Color Doppler of blood vessels with the examination of the obstruction of blood vessels, 24-h monitoring of blood pressure and ECG, laboratory blood tests, urine tests, etc ...
After that, through a conversation with the patient, a special motivational program of treatment and prevention is developed, in order to preserve the health using a personalized medical treatment, a personalized plan of diet and fluid intake, personalized program of physical activity adapted to the level of the cardiovascular risk of the patient in collaboration with professional kinesiologists, personalized program for quitting smoking, personalized anti-stress therapy (breathing exercises, anti-stress therapy) with the aim of lowering the cardiovascular risk. Regular checkups are also prescribed.
